| Opis rewersu | The Conquering Lion of Judah, the imperial symbol of Ethiopia, is depicted in high relief at the centre of the reverse, striding to the right upon a grassy ground line and holding aloft a processional cross-topped staff with a flowing banner in its raised forepaw. The lion wears the imperial crown of Ethiopia atop its head. A Ge'ez legend encircles the upper field with the motto 'Lion of the Tribe of Judah has prevailed', while the Latin legend 'EMPIRE OF ETHIOPIA' curves along the lower border, flanked by the denomination '$ 100' to the right and the Ethiopic numeral date '፲፱፻፷፭' to the left. The Gregorian year '1972' appears in the lower exergual area. |

Issued to mark the 80th birthday of Haile Selassie I, this piece belongs to a proof set commissioned by the Ethiopian government and struck at the British Royal Mint. The series was one of the last major numismatic undertakings of the imperial regime — within three years, Selassie had been deposed by the Derg military council, dying under house arrest in 1975 under circumstances that remain officially disputed.
Mintage across the denomination was tightly limited, with distribution handled largely through international coin dealers rather than domestic channels.
