Part of Cook Islands' long-running lunar series marketed primarily to collectors in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia during the 1990s, this issue was produced well before the Chinese lunar gold coin market became saturated. Cook Islands held no meaningful monetary relationship with China, but the islands' broad licensing arrangements with private minting operations made them a convenient legal issuing authority for coins never intended to circulate anywhere.
