Reverse description Central design features a large anchor overlaid upon a composite scene commemorating the 400th anniversary of the founding of St. John's, Newfoundland. To the left of the anchor shank, a period square-rigged sailing vessel rides stylized waves before a waterfront building, evoking Sir Humphrey Gilbert's 1583 arrival; to the right, a stone fortification with a flagpole flying the Canadian flag represents the historic military presence at the harbour. Two small maple leaf devices flank the upper arc. The legend 1583 - ST. JOHN'S - 1983 arcs across the upper field, while NEWFOUNDLAND and TERRE NEUVE appear on the left and right periphery respectively, with 100 DOLLARS along the lower arc, all separated by raised dots.
