The .500 fineness is a deliberate choice rather than a cost-cutting measure; it was the standard adopted for Barbadian commemorative gold at this time, yielding roughly 3.1 grams of fine gold per coin.
The "Settlement" designation refers to the 1625 English landing at what is now Holetown — the island's first permanent European settlement, predating Bridgetown itself.
