| Additional information |
Struck the year of Diana's death in the Paris tunnel crash on 31 August 1997, this Niuean commemorative is one of dozens of gold issues that flooded the market from small Pacific and Caribbean nations following her funeral — jurisdictions with negligible local economies that licensed their monetary authority to private minting operations for exactly this kind of event-driven collector release. Niue had been doing so since the late 1980s.
KM#101 corresponds to a 1/10 oz gold format widely used by the Perth Mint under contract for Pacific island issuers during this period.
