The Perth Mint's lunar series has run continuously since 1996, making the 2023 Rabbit issue part of the second full rotation through the twelve-year cycle. The "6th portrait" designation reflects the posthumous effigy of Elizabeth II approved for use following her death in September 2022 — this coin was among the earliest Australian issues struck under that authorization, with the portrait modeled by sculptor Susanna Blunt's existing work rather than a newly commissioned likeness.
