Cook Islands became one of the more prolific issuers of commemorative gold in the 1990s, producing dozens of collector pieces under licensing arrangements that had little to do with domestic monetary policy and everything to do with the international bullion coin market. This Olympic National Park piece is part of a broader American national parks series minted for the numismatic trade rather than circulation.
Olympic National Park in Washington State was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, one of relatively few U.S. sites to hold that status at the time of striking.
