Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse bears the fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Susanna Blunt, depicting a mature bare-headed portrait of the Queen facing right, wearing a diamond necklace and drop earrings. The legend arcs around the upper periphery reading ELIZABETH II CANADA D∙G∙REGINA, with the date 2006 positioned to the lower right of the effigy. The portrait is rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field, consistent with the proof finish of the issue.

Aanvullende informatie

This issue commemorates the International Hockey Series of 1976, when Canada and the Soviet Union met in a continuation of the rivalry ignited by the 1972 Summit Series. The 1976 matches drew considerably less attention than their predecessor but remained politically loaded throughout — played in the shadow of détente and with both nations acutely aware that hockey had become a proxy for Cold War credibility.

The 14-karat gold composition — unusual for a bullion-adjacent issue — reflects the RCM's practice during this period of producing collector gold at lower fineness to reduce face-value exposure while maintaining prestige pricing.
