Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara's government issued this piece to mark Fiji's role in Pacific diplomacy following independence in 1970, with Cakobau selected as the central figure because his 1874 deed of cession to Britain effectively created the colony. The choice was deliberate — framing Fijian sovereignty through the man who surrendered it carries an irony the issuing government apparently accepted without difficulty.
The .500 fineness is notably low for a commemorative gold issue of this period, keeping bullion costs down while maintaining the prestige designation of "gold." Fiji struck several denominations in this series through the Perth Mint in Australia.
