Additional information

Niue's arrangement with the New Zealand Mint has produced dozens of bullion and collector issues since the late 1980s, with the island's nominal sovereignty providing a convenient issuing authority for coins that are designed, struck, and sold entirely outside the territory. The Green Sea Turtle belongs to a broader Pacific wildlife series marketed primarily to Asian collector markets, where demand for fine gold with regional fauna subjects ran strong through the mid-2010s.

Niue's GDP at the time of issue was roughly USD $10 million annually. The face value of a single coin exceeded what most islanders earned in months.
