The gladiator's helmet — specifically the galea in its crested, visored form — was never standardized equipment issued by Rome. Individual fighters, particularly the heavily armored murmillo and thraex classes, sourced or were assigned helmets that varied considerably by ludus and period. What survives archaeologically is fragmentary; the famous Pompeii helmets, buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD, remain among the only near-complete examples and directly inform most modern reconstructions, including shaped numismatic pieces like this one.
