Reverse description Central design features a stylised imperial crown flanked by two confronted phoenixes with outstretched wings, above which a radiant sun is depicted. Below the crown, a large chrysanthemum blossom — the imperial flower of Japan — is rendered in high relief against an ornamental foliate background. A brilliant-cut diamond is set above the crown between the phoenixes. The circular legend 'CELEBRATING THE ENTHRONEMENT OF THE EMPEROR' runs along the rim, with the fineness mark '.9999' inscribed in the lower field.

Additional information

Issued to mark the Reiwa era accession ceremonies of Emperor Naruhito, which took place in October 2019 following his father Akihito's abdication — the first imperial abdication in Japan in roughly two centuries. Akihito had petitioned for years to step down on grounds of age and health, requiring a special one-time legal provision since Japanese law contained no mechanism for voluntary abdication.

Cook Islands has no constitutional connection to Japan; this is a bullion-adjacent commemorative exploiting the territory's licensing arrangements with foreign mints and distributors.
