The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority replaced the Cayman Islands Currency Board in 1997, giving the territory its own dedicated monetary institution — though the practical relationship with sterling and the fixed 1:1.2 peg to the US dollar remained unchanged. This C Series, introduced in 2006, was De La Rue's update on earlier designs rather than a wholesale redesign, retaining the broad visual scheme while adding upgraded security elements appropriate to a jurisdiction handling significant offshore banking volumes.
The CI dollar consistently punches above its weight as a currency — it remains one of the highest-valued dollar-denominated banknotes in the world, making the 100-dollar denomination an unusually large sum by any measure.
