Brimstone Hill Fortress, the subject of this commemorative, was under UNESCO consideration throughout the early 1980s and received World Heritage status in 1999. Built largely by enslaved Africans under British military direction from the late 17th century onward, it withstood a French siege in 1782 — the very year this coin marks — before falling after a month of bombardment. Britain recovered the fortress under the Treaty of Paris the following year.
Saint Kitts and Nevis issued this piece just one year before achieving full independence in 1983, making it one of the last gold issues struck under full Crown dependency status.
