| 裏面の説明 | The reverse depicts a finely engraved composition of a female bowhead whale and her calf swimming together, rendered in naturalistic detail within a raised inner circle. The mother whale is shown in profile facing left with the smaller calf positioned below and slightly behind, both in a calm, horizontal pose suggesting Arctic waters. The engraver's initials RRC appear to the right of the central design. The legend CANADA arcs along the upper periphery flanked by maple leaf ornaments, the date 1988 appears in the lower field within the inner circle, and the denomination 100 DOLLARS is inscribed along the lower border outside the inner ring. |

The bowhead whale series marked Canada's first use of .5833 fine gold — a deliberate choice by the Royal Canadian Mint to produce a coin accessible at a lower price point than the .999 Maple Leaf issues without abandoning the bullion market entirely. The 1988 issue was the inaugural entry, with subsequent years featuring different wildlife subjects.
Mintage was capped at 10,000 pieces across all markets.
