| Obverse description | Right-facing diademed and draped bust of Queen Elizabeth II occupies the central field, rendered in the Machin-style effigy used on Canadian coinage from 1965 onward. The Queen wears a tiara and her hair is styled in a delicate upswept arrangement. The legend ELIZABETH II is inscribed along the left arc and D·G· REGINA along the right arc, with CANADA appearing along the lower periphery flanked by two small maple leaf devices. The portrait is executed in high relief with finely detailed hair and drapery, set against a smooth field. |

The bowhead whale series marked Canada's first use of .5833 fine gold — a deliberate choice by the Royal Canadian Mint to produce a coin accessible at a lower price point than the .999 Maple Leaf issues without abandoning the bullion market entirely. The 1988 issue was the inaugural entry, with subsequent years featuring different wildlife subjects.
Mintage was capped at 10,000 pieces across all markets.
