Niue's 1987 commemorative program was one of the Pacific island territory's earliest forays into the collector coin market, a revenue strategy that small sovereign states were increasingly adopting through licensed arrangements with private minting firms. Boris Becker was the obvious subject — he had won Wimbledon in 1985 at seventeen, becoming the youngest men's singles champion in the tournament's history, and his commercial appeal at the time was extraordinary.
The five-ounce format places this squarely in the large-format bullion-commemorative category that flooded the market in the late 1980s. KM#3 suggests this was among Niue's very first numismatic issues.
