Tokelau has no mint of its own and issues coins entirely as a revenue-generating exercise administered through New Zealand, with the New Zealand Mint in Auckland producing the bulk of its numismatic output. This 100-dollar piece is part of a series depicting the Twelve Apostles, a format that proved commercially successful enough in the Pacific island collector market to run through multiple issues between 2012 and 2015.
James the Apostle — traditionally identified as James son of Zebedee — was martyred under Herod Agrippa I around 44 AD, making him the first of the Twelve to be executed according to the Acts of the Apostles.
