The series was coordinated under the umbrella of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, which pooled minting arrangements to make such issues economically viable for small island nations that lacked their own mint facilities entirely.
The Amazon parrot species native to Saint Lucia — Amazona versicolor — was already on CITES Appendix I by this date, with wild population estimates in the low hundreds.
