| Reverse description | The reverse features a richly detailed composition commemorating the 80th birthday of Empress Michiko of Japan. A stylised ho-o (Japanese phoenix) with elaborately engraved plumage is depicted in the upper field, its outstretched wings framing a decorative chain motif. At the centre of the design, a radiant chrysanthemum — the imperial seal of Japan — is rendered in high relief. In the lower field, a bouquet of five fully bloomed roses with green foliage is applied in polychrome colour, surrounded by an ornamental vine border that encircles the entire reverse. The curved legend 80th Birthday Celebration of the Empress arcs along the upper periphery, with the fineness mark .9999 inscribed at the lower centre. |
