The Super Pit — formally the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines open-cut operation — is one of the largest open-pit gold mines in the world, stretching roughly 3.5 kilometres long and reaching depths approaching 600 metres. Gold was first discovered at Kalgoorlie in 1893 by prospector Paddy Hannan, triggering a rush that transformed a near-waterless stretch of Western Australia into one of the most productive goldfields on earth. The mine has been continuously operational in its current open-cut form since 1989.
Perth Mint's use of .9999 fine gold — four nines purity — places this above the three-nines standard common to most bullion coinage.
