The Sydney Opera House was completed in 1973 after one of the most publicly acrimonious construction projects in Australian history — architect Jørn Utzon resigned in 1966 following a dispute with the New South Wales government over fees and design control, and never returned to see the finished building. He received the Pritzker Prize in 2003, the committee explicitly noting that no other living architect's work was so universally recognized by a single structure.
The Royal Australian Mint's 2023 bullion issue marks the Opera House's half-century anniversary. One troy ounce of .9999 fine gold.
