Perth Mint's Chinese Dragon bullion bar-coin hybrid occupies an odd corner of the market — legal tender denomination assigned to a bar-format product, a structure the Perth Mint has used for decades to sidestep certain import restrictions in Asian markets where coins and bars are taxed differently. The Chinese lunar-themed bullion program has been one of the mint's most commercially significant export lines since the 1990s, with China remaining the dominant destination for Australian gold bullion.
The 2022 Dragon falls in the Year of the Tiger under the Chinese zodiac, not the dragon — the dragon imagery here is series branding rather than annual calendar designation.
