Beschrijving keerzijde A highly detailed, three-dimensional relief depiction of the Welcome Stranger nugget — the world's largest alluvial gold nugget, discovered in Victoria, Australia in 1869 — occupies the central field. The nugget's irregular, naturalistic form is rendered with fine surface texture, conveying its raw, unrefined character. The arc legend 'AUSTRALIAN NUGGET' curves along the upper periphery, while 'WELCOME STRANGER 1869' arcs below the central motif. The lower exergual area bears the inscriptions '2019 1oz 9999 GOLD', and the Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark appears at lower right.

Aanvullende informatie

The Australian Nugget series dates to 1986, when the Perth Mint launched it partly to compete directly with the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf in the global bullion market. The shift to the kangaroo motif — which rotates annually — came in 1989 after the original nugget designs proved less internationally recognizable. Proof versions like this one are struck multiple times with polished dies on burnished blanks, making them a distinct manufacturing exercise from the bullion strikes rather than simply a fancier version of the same coin.

The 6th portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark, was adopted by the Perth Mint beginning in 2019.
