Perth Mint's high-relief gold proof program has built a serious collector following, and the lunar series behind it traces back to 1996. The Year of the Dog falls in the twelfth and final position of the Chinese zodiac cycle, making 2018 the close of the series' second full rotation at Perth.
High-relief striking at this specification requires multiple die passes under significantly greater pressure than standard proof production — a process Perth has refined considerably since early lunar issues showed inconsistent field depth.
