The Perth Mint's platinum koala series, running since 1987, was one of the first platinum bullion programs issued outside the Soviet Union's Palladium and platinum strikes. By 2005, the one-ounce denomination had accumulated enough secondary market depth to attract institutional buyers alongside collectors. The "Industry" privy or finish designation on this year's issue reflects the Mint's practice of differentiating annual releases to suppress melt-and-flip arbitrage among bullion holders.
