| Reverse description | The reverse presents a finely engraved scene of two nineteenth-century gold prospectors engaged in alluvial mining, part of the Australian Prospector Series designed by Stuart Devlin. The left figure, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, operates a wooden cradle rocker, while the right figure pours ore from a bag into a prospecting pan set on the ground before him. The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark appears in the lower right field. The arcing legend 'THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET 1 OZ. 9999 GOLD' surrounds the upper and right portions of the design, with the series designation 'Australian Prospector Series' inscribed in a smaller script within the upper field, and the date '2002' prominently displayed in the lower exergue, all within a beaded border. |

| Additional information |
The Australian Nugget series shifted from depicting actual named nuggets — Welcome Stranger, Hand of Faith — to a rotating kangaroo design in 1990, a change driven by Perth Mint's marketing decision to broaden international bullion appeal. The "Nugget" name was retained purely for brand continuity despite the design pivot. By 2002, the series was well established in Asian bullion markets, particularly Japan, where legal constraints on gold ownership had only fully relaxed in 1998.
