Australia's platinum koala program launched in 1987 as a direct competitor to the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Eagle bullion series, with Perth positioning itself to capture a share of the growing investment-grade platinum market. The third portrait of Elizabeth II, sculpted by Raphael Maklouf, appeared on Australian coinage from 1985 and was already being phased out on some series by the early 1990s, making the 1991–1992 issues transitional in terms of portrait use.
The koala design changes annually, a deliberate strategy to drive collector demand alongside pure bullion interest.
