The P#56 was issued to mark the 1992 quincentenary of Columbus's first landfall — widely accepted as occurring in the Bahamas in October 1492, though the precise island remains genuinely disputed among historians. It was a commemorative issue in purpose, but the Central Bank treated it as fully legal tender rather than a collector-only release.
De La Rue's production for the Bahamas throughout this period was consistent with their broader Commonwealth work, and the P#56 shows no known major printing varieties or error notes. High-denomination commemoratives from small island nations in this era frequently ended up in collector hands almost immediately, meaning genuinely circulated examples are harder to locate than uncirculated ones.
