Additional information

The Centre Block of Parliament Hill burned on the night of February 3–4, 1916, a fire so destructive it gutted the entire building save for the Library of Parliament, whose librarian had the presence of mind to order the iron doors sealed before the flames reached it. The cause was never definitively established — a carelessly discarded cigar was the prevailing theory, though arson was suspected by some given wartime tensions.

Reconstruction began almost immediately, concluding in 1927 with the Peace Tower replacing the original Victoria Tower.
