The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as a branch of Britain's Royal Mint, established specifically to refine and coin gold from the Western Australian gold rushes that had been flooding into Fremantle since the early 1890s. It outlasted every other Royal Mint branch in Australia — the Sydney and Melbourne branches closed in 1926 and 1921 respectively — and eventually transferred to full Western Australian government ownership in 1970. That unbroken operational continuity is the actual story behind a 125th anniversary issue.
Charles III's first portrait on Australian coinage, sculpted by King's official effigy designer Jody Clark, replaced Elizabeth II's fifth portrait following her death in September 2022.
