The Australian Gold Swan series launched in 2016 as a direct competitor to established bullion programs from the Royal Canadian Mint and the U.S. Mint, targeting investors who had grown skeptical of designs that never changed year to year. Perth rotates the swan reverse annually, which has created a secondary collector market running parallel to the straight bullion demand — an unusual dynamic for a coin sold primarily on gold content.
Charles III's accession portrait, sculpted by King's official effigy artist Claudia Miles, appeared on Australian coinage from 2023 onward following the death of Elizabeth II in September 2022.
