By 1997, Sierra Leone was an independent republic in the middle of a devastating civil war that had begun in 1991, making the choice to commemorate a moment of British imperial pageantry an unusual one for the issuing authority. This coin was almost certainly produced for the international collector market rather than domestic circulation.
