The Astro Boy series coincided with the character's 50th anniversary — Osamu Tezuka's robot boy having first appeared in print in April 1952. These were never intended for domestic circulation in a country where per-capita income at the time hovered well below $200 annually; the issues were produced entirely for the collector export market.
