Eritrea declared independence from Ethiopia in May 1993 after a 30-year war and a UN-supervised referendum — this coin was issued the same year, part of a gold bullion and commemorative program the newly established Bank of Eritrea used to generate hard currency before the country had fully built its financial infrastructure.
