The American Liberty High Relief series was revived in 2015 after a nearly century-long gap following the original Saint-Gaudens high-relief double eagle of 1907 — itself a coin whose extreme relief caused such stacking and handling problems that the design was flattened after fewer than 12,000 pieces were struck. The 2019 issue continues an annual rotation of designs within the series, each struck on specially prepared planchets requiring multiple strikes to achieve full relief.
Mintage is capped at 50,000 pieces across the series, though actual production has consistently fallen well short of that ceiling.
