A genuine mule — two dies from unrelated commemorative programs paired either in error or by deliberate exploitation of the Pacific island territory's loose oversight of its licensed coin programs. American Samoa's late-1980s issues were produced under contract arrangements common to small Pacific and Caribbean jurisdictions during the commemorative boom, where Franklin Mint and similar operators held broad licensing authority. Quality control over die pairing was minimal.
Whether the America's Cup and 1988 Seoul Olympics dies were married accidentally or to manufacture a collectible anomaly is unresolved. The Schön listing acknowledges it; KM#11 treats it as a recognized type rather than an error.
