By the time this note was issued in 2007, Zimbabwe's inflation rate was already measured in thousands of percent annually — the 100-dollar denomination, once meaningful, had become effectively worthless within weeks of printing. Giesecke & Devrient had been contracted to supply Zimbabwe's banknotes, but the German firm ultimately suspended the contract in 2008 under pressure from international human rights organizations who argued the currency supply was helping sustain Mugabe's government.
P#69 sits near the beginning of a frantic redenomination sequence that would see Zimbabwe issue notes through the hundreds of trillions before abandoning the dollar entirely in 2009.
