The 1973 series was Barbados's first independent currency issue following the dissolution of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Authority's hold on the island's monetary system — Barbados established its own central bank and introduced the Barbados dollar in 1973, pegged at two to one against the US dollar, a rate it has maintained without realignment ever since.
De La Rue printed the inaugural series across all denominations. The 100-dollar note, as the highest value in that first emission, saw limited everyday circulation and was used primarily for interbank settlements and large commercial transactions. Genuine circulated examples from this first year are considerably harder to locate than the lower denominations.
