The Bank of British North America, though headquartered in Montreal, was incorporated by Royal Charter in London in 1836 and retained strong British institutional ties throughout its existence — which explains why Waterlow and Sons remained its printer of choice well into the twentieth century. By 1911, BBNA was already in a weakened competitive position against the big Canadian chartered banks, and it was absorbed by the Bank of Montreal in 1918.

High-denomination notes of this era circulated almost exclusively between businesses and clearing houses, meaning surviving examples typically show either heavy commercial handling or near-pristine storage — rarely anything in between. Few were printed relative to lower values.
