Liberia's 1977 centennial gold issues commemorate the nation's founding in 1847 by freed American slaves repatriated under the auspices of the American Colonization Society — making Liberia one of Africa's two republics never colonized by a European power. The 130th anniversary fell during the presidency of William Tolbert, who had succeeded the long-ruling William Tubman in 1971 and was actively repositioning Liberia away from its historically tight alignment with the United States.
Tolbert was assassinated in a military coup just three years after this coin was struck.
