The State Bank at New Brunswick was one of New Jersey's longer-lived antebellum state-chartered institutions, surviving well into the National Banking era — a period when most comparable state banks either converted or quietly wound down. A $100 denomination at this date was substantial, aimed at commercial transactions rather than daily wage payments, and would have circulated primarily between merchants, factors, and counting houses along the Raritan River trade corridor.
Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson merged into the American Bank Note Company in 1858, meaning any notes bearing their imprint were printed before that consolidation — the dating range on this example almost certainly reflects continued circulation of older stock rather than new printing after that year.
