The 1984 World Fisheries Conference, convened by the FAO in Rome, prompted a wave of commemorative issues from developing nations whose economies depended directly on fishing revenues. São Tomé e Príncipe — two small islands in the Gulf of Guinea with an exclusive economic zone vastly larger than their landmass — had obvious reason to participate. The piedfort format, struck at double the standard planchet thickness, was a deliberate collector strategy adopted by several small issuers in the 1980s to command premium pricing in European and American numismatic markets.
KM#P1 designation confirms this as the first piedfort listed for the nation.
