| Reverse description | The central field depicts a stylised scene of traditional artisanal fishing, showing a fisherman standing in a dugout canoe and wielding a paddle while a second figure hauls a laden fishing net from stylised wavy waters. The inscription S. TOME 83 appears on the hull of the canoe. The curved legend FAO CONFERENCIA MUNDIAL DE PESCA arcs along the upper periphery, while the date range 1983-1984 is prominently inscribed along the lower border. Two cocoa pods flank the date inscription on either side, serving as decorative ornamental elements referencing the nation's agricultural heritage. |

The 1984 World Fisheries Conference, convened by the FAO in Rome, prompted a wave of commemorative issues from developing nations whose economies depended directly on fishing revenues. São Tomé e Príncipe — two small islands in the Gulf of Guinea with an exclusive economic zone vastly larger than their landmass — had obvious reason to participate. The piedfort format, struck at double the standard planchet thickness, was a deliberate collector strategy adopted by several small issuers in the 1980s to command premium pricing in European and American numismatic markets.
KM#P1 designation confirms this as the first piedfort listed for the nation.
