| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of São Tomé and Príncipe occupies the central field, flanked by two African grey parrots displayed facing one another as supporters. The shield bears a palm tree, and scrolled ribbon banners carrying the national motto UNIDADE DISCIPLINA TRABALHO appear above and below the arms, with a five-pointed star at the top of the shield. The circular legend REPÚBLICA DEMOCRÁTICA DE S. TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE runs along the upper periphery, and the date 1997 appears in the lower field beneath the arms. |

Issued as part of the FAO's long-running program encouraging member nations to mint coins with agricultural themes, this piece came out two years after São Tomé e Príncipe completed a painful IMF structural adjustment program that had slashed public spending and devalued the dobra sharply through the early 1990s. The switch to chromium-clad steel reflected the economic constraints of a country whose GDP per capita ranked among the lowest in the Atlantic world.
