Issued to commemorate the Hassan Tower in Rabat, one of the most recognizable monuments of Almohad dynastic ambition — construction began under Caliph Yacoub al-Mansour around 1195 but halted abruptly upon his death in 1199, leaving the minaret permanently unfinished at roughly half its intended height. The surrounding columns, hundreds of them, are the remnants of a mosque that was never completed.
Bank Al-Maghrib's bimetallic circulation commemoratives from this period were struck in relatively modest numbers compared to European equivalents, and genuine circulation examples are harder to find used than one might expect.
