| Additional information |
Sharjah's 1970 coinage was issued just months before the emirate joined the UAE federation in 1971, making these among the last independent issues from a territory that had operated under British protectorate status since 1853. The "Mona Lisa" designation refers to a short-lived series of numismatic issues produced speculatively for the collector market rather than circulation — Sharjah had no meaningful domestic coinage tradition and these were frankly a revenue exercise aimed at foreign collectors.
KM#2 is one of several denominations in the set, struck at a time when Sharjah's oil revenues were minimal and the ruler, Sheikh Khalid III, was actively seeking outside income streams.
