Andorra's bullion coinage program launched in the mid-1980s as a direct response to the principality's unusual fiscal position — no central bank, no currency of its own, and a long-standing dependence on both French francs and Spanish pesetas. The 100 Diners gold issues were among the first instruments Andorra used to assert any kind of formal monetary presence, issued under the co-princeship of Joan Martí i Alanis, the Bishop of Urgell, who held that role jointly with the French head of state.

The .9999 fineness is notable — finer than the Krugerrand's .9167 and matching the Canadian Maple Leaf standard introduced just a few years earlier, clearly a deliberate positioning decision for the international bullion market.
