Additional information

The "Change of 7 November" refers to the bloodless coup of November 7, 1987, in which Prime Minister Zine El Abidine Ben Ali removed the aging Habib Bourguiba from power, citing medical incapacity — a diagnosis produced by a single compliant physician within hours. Ben Ali then institutionalized the anniversary as a national celebration, commissioning commemorative coinage at regular intervals to legitimize what was, in practice, a seizure of power dressed in constitutional language.

The 2004 elections referenced on this piece returned Ben Ali with 94.5% of the vote — a figure that drew sharp criticism from international observers.
