Iraq's 1936 series was issued under the currency arrangements tied to the sterling area, with the Iraqi dinar pegged to the pound sterling at parity — a rate that would hold until 1959. The Government of Iraq, rather than a central bank, remained the direct issuing authority; the Iraqi National Bank would not be established until 1947, leaving fiscal and monetary functions awkwardly combined at the ministerial level throughout the 1930s.
Bradbury Wilkinson's New Malden works were printing high-value colonial and quasi-colonial currency for much of the region during this period. At 100 dinars, this was the highest denomination in common government issue — a note that moved between banks and treasuries rather than hands.
